We at Wishes Tea have a personal affection for the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. A long-time supporter of our company has a Griffon of his own (pictured in the cover photo for this very tea), and on one memorable occasion, when co-owner Sean was hanging out at this supporter’s house for a few days, Sean’s pillow mysteriously went missing. The pillow, or rather its humble remains, turned up in the back yard later that day. Another victory for the Griffon. This hearty, limber hunting dog with a bristly, but somehow still soft coat of fur, hails from the Netherlands. While a good companion dog, it was born and bred to help hunters and does that job well. Clearly not even pillows are safe from this capable canine!
As for the tea, this is a delicious single-source second flush Darjeeling. What the heck does that mean? Darjeeling is a style of black tea from the Darjeeling region of India. Some tea connoisseurs refer to leaf grown in Darjeeling as the “champaign of tea.” In India, tea picked right as the new leaves grow, at the start of the annual harvest (usually the late winter months) is considered the ‘first flush’ and is among the most prized tea in the world. After the first flush, the leaves are allowed to grow and mature for a few months until the ‘second flush’ in the middle of the year. These teas are also highly sought-after for their stronger, more complex flavors which some prefer over the more delicate first-flush tea, and the window for the second flush is pretty small. Third flush teas are extremely mature, to the point that they’ve started losing their flavor and make up more commercial, cheaper teas. To add to the rarity, the estate high in the Himalayan foothills where this particular Darjeeling is grown only sells about 100 lbs of it outside of Asia a year, and we’ve snagged some of it for you.
